You’ve decided to have cosmetic surgery. Now you need to find a qualified, skilled surgeon and a reputable cosmetic surgery center. The cosmetic surgery center should have the latest surgical technology used in combination with the most advanced services and products available on the market to achieve the most natural look possible.

The following are common questions regarding pre and post surgical instructions; however you still need to inquire with your surgeon prior to your cosmetic surgery.

How do I prepare for surgery?

During your consultation with the surgeon he will ask you many questions regarding your medical history to see if you are a candidate for the procedure you are interesting in having. Bring any information regarding your medical history along with a list of any prescription medications and supplements. He will also review the surgery procedure, show you before and after photos of other clients, and get you’re before picture.

What is an informed consent?

An informed consent means you have an excellent understanding about your expectations and risks, as well as side effects, and all pre and postsurgical information involved with your surgery. You are “informed” and making the right decision for you.

What are some things I can do to prepare for surgery?

After reviewing your medication any blood thinners or supplements/vitamins like vitamin E, ginkgo bilova or omega 3 fish oil, the surgeon may recommend stopping them prior to surgery to reduce bleeding and bruising. Also, he will ask you to stop using tobacco two weeks prior and two weeks following surgery. This will help speed up your healing time. Remember also to stop eating and drinking anything after midnight the night before your surgery. This will help reduce any effects you may have from anesthesia. If you are a diabetic, please consult your surgeon for special arrangements.

What happens when I check in for surgery?

This depends if you are having outpatient surgery or spending the night. I had a browlift, eyelid surgery and a nose job done at the same time and I spent the night. If you are combining procedures I highly recommend an overnight stay. There will be additional pay work and fees if you wish to stay overnight. With any surgery have someone take you home. Make sure someone stays with you at least the first night home. With my surgery I needed care for two nights.

What do I expect after my surgery?

Most patients expect swelling and bruising post op and this is more pronounced within a day or two before it subsides. After 3 or 4 days you will feel better, but the swelling and bruising will last two to three weeks before completely clearing up. Elevation and ice applied to the affected area will help you heal faster. Surgical garments may be recommended to assist in the reduction of bruising and swelling. If you have received local anesthesia, you will most likely go home immediately after your procedure. If you have received general, IV sedation, IV general, spinal, regional or epidural anesthesia, you will be taken to a recovery room for one to two hours, where nurses will monitor your blood pressure, respiration and pulse until you are released from the hospital.

Will I need special prescriptions and instructions following surgery?

Depending on the procedure, your surgeon will instruct you in regards to your activity limitations. No bending, lifting or straining for at least three weeks. You may have special instruction for hygiene, diet and wound care. You should receive your antibiotic medication prior to your surgery so you will have it when you get home.

When do I see the surgeon again post surgery?

Your postsurgical office visit is usually within five to eight days. At this time the surgeon may remove any stitches. Most cosmetic surgery centers will evaluate your results over a year. However after three months you will see 90% of the final result. You will look presentable within 10 to two weeks. If you had any facial surgery makeup should cover any remaining bruising. After six months you should see a more natural expression to your face.
