Cosmetic Surgery Facelifts

Cosmetic surgery facelifts will tighten the skin to make your face have a more youthful appearance. There are a few cosmetic surgery facelift choices; a standard facelift, a thread facelift and a mini or weekend facelift.

One, the standard facelift, is by making an incision around the hairline and separating the skin from the underlying tissue. The surplus fat and skin are removed while the surrounding muscles are tightened and then repositioned with stitches or staples. After the surgery, the treated area is wrapped in bandages. The tightening of facial muscles will give patients a rejuvenated, younger-looking appearance.

Following your cosmetic face lift surgery, the healing process will last more than a few weeks. During this time, pain medication is usually prescribed, and your daily activities may be limited. Since the incisions are made above the hairline, whenever possible, almost any scarring will be concealed by the patient’s hair. For older patients, face lift surgery is likely to be more invasive than for patients in their 30s and 40s, who often require relatively slight modifications to offset signs of aging. Stitches or staples will be removed four to seven days after the surgery.

A second, a thread facelift, the cosmetic surgeon inserts thin threads into the face through tiny incisions made in the targeted area. These threads attach to the skin tissue and are then pulled back to lift and smooth the face. Almost instantly, the treated areas will be raised slightly, doing away with any sagging and giving patients a much younger appearance. Patients are usually fully conscious during the procedure, so the surgeon and patient can agree with the look of cosmetic surgery thread lift. Once the threads are knotted, they become hidden within the skin itself, and any scarring that results will be virtually invisible.faceliftdiagram1a

The second procedure takes less time to heal and there are also fewer risks. Because it involves little or no anesthesia and less time at the hospital, you should be able to return to work within a week and resume your daily activities within two to three weeks, including lifting and exercise. Your surgeon will provide you with all your instructions pre and post surgery.

The third cosmetic facelift is the mini facelift or the weekend facelift which can be performed quickly and involves a shorter recovery period than traditional facelift surgery. The mini facelift concentrates on specific areas of the face, such as the neck and the folds of the nose. Using smaller incisions and often taking advantage of endoscopic facelift technology. The cosmetic surgeon lifts, repositions, and removes facial tissue then carefully repositions the skin using small sutures.

What are some of the risks with a cosmetic surgery facelift?

• Injury to the nerves that control facial muscles – usually temporary.
• Problems with healing of the skin – this is common for patients who smoke or take supplements that cause bruising.
• Scarring – the surgeon will always try to hide the face lift scars.
• Crust on the incisions – only temporary.
• Numbness or tingling around the incision areas – this should be temporary, but sometimes last.
• Skin or hair loss – usually if any around and on the scar line.
• Skin discoloration – a rare condition that can continue for several months.

If you follow your surgeon´s advice and instructions you will minimize the risk of complications. Don´t forget to ask your surgeon questions if you feel anxiety for your cosmetic facelift surgery.

But what if you do not want to take a week or more off a work….are there alternative methods to improving the texture of your face then having one of these cosmetic surgery facelifts?

Today the FDA approved a new Botox like drug that will smooth wrinkles and will last longer. Dysport aka Retalin and will be available in the United States, July or August 2009.

Dysport is a protein extracted from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. The protein was at first used for the treatment of motor disorders and various kinds of involuntary muscular spasms, including cerebral palsy. It was further developed to treat a wide range of neuromuscular disorders, for which it is licensed in over 60 countries.

Along with its desired effects, treatments can cause unwanted side effects. The most common are brief soreness or mild bruising around the injection site. Some people may experience a slight headache that lasts for more than a few hours after treatment.
In a very small percentage of cases there can be a complication called “ptosis” (a drooping eyelid) which may last a few days or up to 4 weeks. Rarely, an allergic reaction can cause a skin rash or “flu like” symptoms. Tell your doctor if you experience any troublesome side effects.

How is it used? Small amounts of Dysport are injected directly into the facial muscles that lie beneath the frown lines. It typically takes three to five small, almost painless injections between the eyebrows for an effective treatment. No local anesthetic is usually required, but like other dermal fillers you can numb the skin over the area before injecting the Dysport. A treatment will take around 10 to 20 minutes. Dysport distributes into the area where Botox is more localized, therefore you will need more Dysport per treatment. Dysport will last from 12 to 18 months

You probably won’t notice it happening, but over the next few days the muscles will gradually relax and you’ll become aware that you can’t contract your frown muscles. You can still blink normally and raise your eyebrows so you will not look unnatural.

There are also a handful of dermal fillers available like Restylane, Thermalfil, Juvederm, Prevelle Silk and Perlane. I personally had Restylane injected in the indentations from my nose to my mouth. Even though they numbed the area it still was very painful for me. I asked the technician if everyone had the same affect and she told me some people have no reaction to the injections while others will sit there and just cry through the whole procedure. (But didn’t stop) What really helped me were the ice packets. Next time I will not only have the numbing cream but also ice down the area before the injections. They said Restylane last six months, but mine lasted eight. faceliftfunny21After the second treatment, Restylane should last 12 to 18 months.

Besides injectables there are laser therapy treatments, chemical peels and over the counter anti-wrinkle creams such as RoC Retinol, Lift SP and Dermitage that can show results instantly. Your cosmetic surgery center should have all the information regarding any procedure or skin product that you are interested in receiving. Please find a reputable cosmetic surgery center and make sure your surgeon is certified with the ASAC. Having a surgeon you can trust will put your mind at rest in regards to obtaining your desired results.
