Cosmetic Surgery Gone Wrong

Due to the economy and the desire to have cosmetic surgery you may consider the cost of the surgery over the qualifications of the surgeon. What happens when you don’t find a qualified surgeon? Many times you will find you have had cosmetic surgery gone wrong one way or another. What can a surgeon do to botch your procedure? Every cosmetic surgical procedure has its risks, complications and problems. You need to understand and discuss your expectations and concerns prior to your surgery.

There are many types of cosmetic surgeries gone wrong where complications may arise, even death, but they are rare. Liposuction for example has some severe problems which may include infections, allergic reaction to aesthesia, blood clotting, damage to vital organs, damage to nerves and fluid loss. Less severe risks are scaring, bruising and numbness (which can last for years).

Unskilled surgeons may remove too much fat from one targeted area or take too much fat in a single day. Excess liposuction can cause dents, lumps and sagging skin and to minimize these complications you should schedule multiple liposuction procedures over several days.

Along with scheduling multiple surgeries your surgeon will have other instructions for surgical preparation and postoperative care. If you smoke, your cosmetic surgeon will advise you to stop two weeks prior to and following liposuction surgery. If you take supplements you might have to stop taking them to reduce bruising, like Omega 3 Fish Oil. You may also choose an alternative method for fat removal. There are non-surgical liposuction choices available if you are not a good candidate for liposuction and would prefer another method.

Lipodissolve is one non-surgical alternative, but like any cosmetic procedure it isn’t risk free. Short-term side effects are lumps and bruising along with itching, swelling and general discomfort at the injection site. Lipodissolve is relatively new to the United States and there are only a few qualified surgeons to perform the procedure. Make sure you give your surgeon all your medical history including all medications and any allergies to medication that you are aware of. As long as your doctor has all the necessary information about your medical history, he or she can warn you if you are not a good candidate for Lipodissolve. Your doctor will also be able to make any necessary safety preparations to accommodate your individual medical needs. Those who are obese should not undergo Lipodissolve treatments for reasons of safety and decreased effectiveness. Diet and exercise and/or liposuction are better alternatives to lipodissolve.

If you go to an inexperienced surgeon he/she may not recognize that you may not be a good candidate and more serious complications may occur. These complications include but are not limited to intermittent diarrhea as your body converts the broken down fatty structures into waste products. Some women have reported the occurrence of intermenstrual bleeding as a result of hormones secreted by the broken-down fat cells. Also, an unqualified surgeon is more unlikely to achieve positive results than he/she is to actually cause harm, but it is always best to take precautions and do your homework.

If you were obese and lost a lot of weight you might want to have the extra skin removed or have a tummy tuck. Tummy tuck or Abdominoplasty is a more complicated surgery than liposuction and like any surgery involves some risks. Since this is a major surgery you must be a qualified patient, follow the surgeon’s pre and post surgical instructions and are aware that you will have a drain after surgery. With major surgery come possible major risks and complications. These risks include anesthesia reactions, aspiration pneumonia, bleeding, blood clots, delayed wound healing, infection and reaction to drugs.

Blood clots are possible because you are under anesthesia over 30 minutes for a tummy tuck. If you are on birth control, hormone replacement therapy and some forms of cancer treatment you can increase the likelihood of clotting. You will have to wear compression socks during and after surgery to reduce the risk for blood clots in your legs. Getting out of bed and moving around as soon as possible not only helps reduce your risk for blood clots it also speeds up your healing time.

Surgery in the stomach is considered a slow healing area therefore prone to infections. Make sure your surgery is done in a sterile environment. Keep the area clean and change the bandages often, especially when there is a lot of drainage. Signs of infection are sweating, chills, fever and the area around the incision has green pus. Call your surgeon immediately because you will need some antibiotics.

Delayed healing can also promote scarring and skin loss at the incision site. When skin loss occurs the surgeon may have to graft skin to the affected area. To curtail slow healing you must stop smoking at least two weeks prior to your surgery, stop any supplements that promote bleeding and bruising, eat a healthy diet and get plenty of sleep.

Last but not least, I had mentioned the drain used after tummy tuck surgery. Drains after surgery are used in the patients who need them — and most tummy tuck patients need them. The purpose of tummy tuck drains is to decrease the risk of seroma formation (i.e., fluid collecting between the muscle layer and the skin flap). A seroma could be the source of infection. The use of drains after abdominoplasty provides a point of exit for this fluid, which reduces the risk of complications after tummy tuck surgery.liporiskfunny

Tummy tuck drains are silicone tubes that are inserted into your abdomen either through a specially made incision or incisions, or through the tummy tuck incision. These tubes connect to bulbs that provide suction for excess fluid that accumulates during your recovery period at home. Usually, the patient measures the drainage each day, discarding the fluid and keeping track of the amount. It may be possible to remove the drains after only three to five days following surgery, though it may take as long as three weeks or more, depending on how much fluid is draining. Tummy tuck drains are an inconvenience, but the safety they provide is well worth it.

As with any cosmetic procedure it is important to be fully informed of the risks as well as the benefits, ask questions, have realistic expectations and do your homework. Find a certified cosmetic surgeon that you are comfortable with and you will be satisfied with your results. Not like Tera Reed and her cosmetic surgery gone wrong.
