If you are considering cosmetic surgery your number one priority is to find a reputable cosmetic surgeon. A “cosmetic surgeon” is a non-specific term that can be a certified plastic surgeon or someone that is untrained in plastic surgery that does cosmetic procedures. If they use the terms “cosmetic surgeon” or “aesthetic surgeon”, they are likely not certified in cosmetic surgery procedures. They maybe excellent dermatologists, OB/Gyn doctors, family physicians, internal medicine doctors or dentists, but few have the qualifications to do cosmetic surgeries. Plastic surgeons are trained in cosmetic surgery as well as reconstructive surgery; this is a specific kind of surgeon that is certified with the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS). Many plastic surgeons will advertise themselves as “cosmetic surgeons”, because the basis of their practice is for cosmetically enhanced elective procedures only.
To become board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, a plastic surgeon must first complete rigorous training in an accredited training program. Subsequently, the surgeon must pass arduous written and oral examinations given by the board. The American Board of Plastic Surgery is one of only 24 accredited specialty boards recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) and is the only board recognized by the ABMS to certify a surgeon in plastic surgery. There are a number of other organizations that include “facial”, “aesthetic” or “cosmetic” in the title, but these are not recognized by the ABMS and do not have the same training requirements. To verify a physician’s board status, contact the American Board of Plastic Surgery at (215) 587-9322. You may also contact the American Board of Medical Specialties at 1(800) 776-2378.
The American Board of Cosmetic Surgery (ABCS) is not recognized by the ABMS and does not require prerequisite training in plastic surgery. Very few, if any plastic surgeons are certified by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery and no non-plastic surgeons are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons. Non-surgical cosmetic procedures do not require certification. These procedures can be done by a plastic surgeon’s skilled staff, dermatologist, specifically trained dentist or physician.

After getting rid of the fat in your buttock to restore shape and volume, a thick synthetic gel filler called Macrolane is injected. Macrolane is a similar version to facial dermal fillers.
Gummy Bear Implants are in the US under a clinical trial for the next few months before final approve from the FDA. Instead of the implants being filled with saline or a liquid silicone gel, the 410 cohesive gel breast implants are filled with a cohesive silicone that is described as a “soft solid”. Therefore, one of the main advantages of the Gummy Bear breast implants is that they seem to retain their shape.

Remember not only should you find a certified cosmetic surgeon each surgeon maybe specialized in an area of cosmetic surgery, so do your homework. Nowadays, most surgeons have websites that will give you a heads up on what they specialize in, if they are board certified, show before and after photos and tell you their up-front costs per procedure. Also keep in mind to ask a lot of questions during your consultation, don’t settle for a surgeon unless you feel confident they will give you what you want. Finding the right plastic (cosmetic) surgeon is a step in the right direction.
